National Gallery Opens Stage 1 of Redevelopment

The National gallery of Australia has just opened Stage 1 of its long term redevelopment program. This $100m plus stage has enabled the creation of significant additional spaces with greatly improved public access.

A unique feature called Skyspace has also been included which will, with time, become a wonderful space for contemplation.

This project has also provided the facility to pay homage to Australia's Aboriginal heritage. It is only recently that the general public has commenced to recognise the importance of Aboriginal culture.

Some 58000 years before the birth of Christ, over 56000 years before the Roman Empire, perhaps over 50000 years before the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Australian Aboriginal Culture was alive and well.

It is about time the oldest culture, living or dead, on the planet received its due place in artistic recognition. And of course, it is a living culture.

Please enjoy this small selection of photographs and the video of the Skyspace feature.  Also take a tour on the National Gallery link and, don't forget, come down and visit.

See you around.
